Inside Alfa: Anita Ihma

For our latest Alfa member interview, we had a short chat with Anita Ihma from Poznan, Poland. Among other things, we discussed the stressful aspects of the logistics, but also how much she loves working in an international context. Happy reading!

How did you get started in the logistics industry and what has your journey been like so far?

I started my journey in logistics while I was studying. At the end of my studies at the Maritime Academy in Szczecin, I was looking for an internship in logistics. It was a difficult period because the unemployment in Poland was quite high. While searching for a suitable logistics company, I offered to work for free. And it was then that I came across major logistics operator Kuehne Nagel. Working at this company allowed me to learn the whole logistics process. I found out what logistics work looks like in each of its departments: marine, air, road, customs. It gave me the opportunity to choose the right branch of transportation for my career. The maritime transport seemed the most interesting to me so I started my full-time job in this area.

How do you set yourself apart from your competitors?

I believe in an individual approach to the client or agent. We are a small shipping company, so we can afford more personal relationships. This is especially important when problems arise. We always try to find a solution.

What do you like the most about being a member of our logistics network?

It’s good to feel like part of the family. I like the personalized approach and the possibility of chatting together on WhatsApp.

If there is one thing that you could change to the logistics industry, what would it be and why?

Logistics is a very stressful industry. The pressure of time is exhausting. I watch my logistics colleagues from the Mediterranean countries with envy. They seem to be more relaxed, calm. It would be good if people in Poland could also be like this. Although this seems unlikely because we have less sunshine here, so we can’t recharge our batteries just as effectively.

What do you like most about the industry and your job in particular?

Every day is different. You can’t predict what it will look like. Even if you make a schedule, you will end up doing something completely different. Multitasking requires a lot of attention. The most interesting thing is working in an international environment. You start to feel that the world is not as big as you thought. In the morning you keep in touch with China, and in the afternoon with the USA. This is amazing.

How do you relax in your free time?

After work, I have to clear my head so I relax by walking my dog and practicing yoga and pilates.

— Thanks, Anita!
