Report Reveals Digital Transformation Progress in Container Shipping Industry

The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has released its “State of the Industry Report 2024,” highlighting significant advancements in digitalization within the container shipping sector.

Drawing on insights from 400 cargo owners and 45 industry leaders, this report outlines strategies to overcome obstacles and enhance efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

The report reveals growing adoption of digital tools and standards, while also identifying areas for improvement. Key findings indicate that 86% of cargo owners view digitalization as a means to enhance operational efficiency. Ports and terminals emphasize its role in enabling scalability, while banks point to its potential for risk reduction. The report also notes that digital standards are crucial for seamless operations across the supply chain.

The DCSA, whose members include some of the world’s leading ocean carriers such as MSC, Maersk, and CMA CGM, has championed the adoption of electronic bills of lading (eBL) in the sector. The organization argues that transitioning from physical paper bills of lading could yield $6.5 billion in direct cost savings and facilitate $30–40 billion in annual global trade growth. This shift would not only transform the customer experience but also enhance sustainability in the industry.

“Our landmark report marks a pivotal moment for the industry, allowing us to reflect on our progress with pride,” said Thomas Bagge, CEO of DCSA. “This year, electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) adoption reached 5%, up from 1.2% in 2021, and carriers adopted more DCSA standards in the first quarter of 2024 than in the whole of 2023.”

Despite the positive trends, the report identifies challenges in the digitalisation journey. While 90% of cargo owners claim readiness for digitalisation, 66% acknowledge the need for external support. Additionally, awareness of digital standards varies across sectors and jurisdictions, indicating room for improvement in education and implementation.

As the container shipping industry continues its digital transformation, the report makes clear that collaboration and standardization will be key to overcoming barriers and realizing the full potential of digitalization within the sector.
